Event description:

Little Egypt’s Speakeasy is a stellar ride of beat-style comedic narration, blistering rhythm & blues, dance and burlesque.

With a cast of Sydney’s hottest performers and a scorching soundtrack straight out of 1950’s USA, Little Egypt’s Speakeasy is the place to kick up your heels and really let your hair down while the cast tell the thrilling, hip-grinding tale of how the best club you’ve never heard of almost met disaster.

This isn’t just a cabaret, it’s an interactive performance in dancing shoes, all wrapped together with the story of a troupe of performers, the eponymous dancer, the club owner that loved her, and the struggling club that houses them all; the club is under threat from council and developers, and only a true intervention from the cast & audience will lead club-owner Don Rameses DeMarco to redemption through dance and soul.

Little Egypt’s Speakeasy is home to a colourful group of performers thanks to the legendary dancer and matriarch, Little Egypt. The club is managed by Don, the stick-in-the-mud brother of the club’s MD Georgie. Don reveals the building in which the club is housed is slated for redevelopment and the Speakeasy will be shut down. Tonight! Little Egypt and the rest of the performers know they must change Don’s mind. What will become of them all? The dancing is scintillating and drop dead gorgeous. The vocalists attack the numbers with a keen and neatly penetrating sense of style. The layers of burlesque, dialogue and song are interwoven into a finish as exotic and rich as the costumes the stars are swathed in.

Cast

Creator Lucian McGuiness — also of ‘Sotch & Soda’ circus — drew inspiration from movement and rhythm to recreate the setting of a nightclub filled with sounds and sights from the 1950s. At the Speakeasy, McGuiness is the sharp and alluring leader of the prettiest band in town. Four excellent vocalists, a beatnik MC, club-owner Don and award-winning burlesque dancers provide the thread that help us imagine the narrative.

The MC and narrator Luke Escombe has a voice as rich as Rockerfeller and magnificent use of words, and is known to fringe audiences in Oz and Edinburgh for ‘Chronic’. Club-owner and forlorn protagonist Dominic Santangelo treads the boards at other Australian festivals as Godfrey Uke. Singer Elana Stone is a vibrant dynamo in personality and in voice, and on leave from the Speakeasy has also toured with The Cat Empire, Bluejuice, and Tripod. Brian Campeau is divine and sensual and leads a film-noir life as a solo artist and member of the Green Mohair Suits. Katie-Elle Reeve is a gutsy and elegant vocalist featured in season 2 of The Voice Australia. Damien Slingsby is captivating on the piano, a wildly entertaining singer, and is a graduate of Ethiopian jazz artists Mulatu Astake and Melbourne’s the Black Jesus Experience. Danica Lee is glamourous, charming, sassy and Miss Burlesque NSW 2011 and Entertainer of the Year at the Miss Burlesque Australia Competition. The divine Kelly Ann Doll is a swing dance champion, Miss Burlesque NSW 2013, and a Miss Burlesque Australia finalist.

Audiences at Little Egypt’s Speakeasy can expect a serve of everything: a killer, laugh-out-loud script, rip-roaring vocal performances, hot and sexy dancers and burlesque beauties, even dance lessons! All this with a smooth-as-silk narrator to show them the way! Little Egypt’s Speakeasy also features a tonne of music, with a combination of well-known songs from the era (including tunes by Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Big Mama Thornton, The Coasters) and original songs written specially for Little Egypt’s Speakeasy.
